Learning To Cook
Well, I’m not exactly LEARNING to cook! But these are the exciting things I get up to when I have an extended time off work! I have time for experiments in the kitchen! I used to love cooking but I’ve become lazy in the kitchen in recent years (doing a lot of what my friend and I call ‘almost cooking’), so maybe with this time off I’ll rediscover the joy of REAL cooking!
For some reason, I wasn’t an early adopter of these very nifty silicone egg poaching cups. Which is surprising since I’m a big lover of kitchen gadgets! I love poached eggs and they’re my egg of choice when I go out for breakfast but I’ve never mastered cooking them the traditional way in swirling water. I gave up too soon. I used to have a little saucepan with four removable metal cups that sat above the water - popular on the 70s and 80s - but they’re fiddly, difficult to clean and I think I killed mine once when I didn’t put enough water in the bottom. In any case, I don’t like having a bulky piece of kitchen equipment that only has one function.
Fed up with my default scrambled eggs for breakfast, I finally decided to buy a couple of these silicone egg poachers. They’re actually not my first ones - the previous ones I tried had 3 holes in the bottom which seems to defeat the purpose and I only used them once. So today I learned to use these. And very happy I am too! I poached it a bit too long on my first try and the yolk wasn’t runny but I’m still happy to eat them that way. I’ve discovered that the top sets quicker with the lid on the pan, and then the yolk is perfect.
Does anyone use these for anything else in the kitchen?
In other news:
I had yet another Physio appointment today. She and I have decided to take a break for awhile while I wait for an appointment with an Orthopaedic Consultant and an MRI. Her torture sessions treatments give me temporary relief but I may need some more intervention to get me back to full mobility. I have booked my appointment with a knee specialist Ortho for the 22nd so we’ll see what he says about it.
