One Edge

I happened to mention to John that I thought I would have to forgo an entry into this week's blip challenge on the subject of 'edge' because I was completely devoid of inspiration and in no fit state to go wandering around looking for it. So he said 'why don't you do a mobius strip, that's only got one edge.

Now, there are most likely thousands of blippers who know what a mobius strip is, but I had never heard of it - anything to do with school science or even maths is a distinct turn off for me.

John took a strip of paper, put a single turn in it and joined the ends together with sellotape. He then took a pen and started to draw a line along the centre of the strip, and - hey presto - came back to the starting point without lifting the pen off the paper!! Magic eh!

Mobius strips have been used as conveyor belts because their one sided nature allows equal wearing of "opposite sides" of the belt. This makes the belts last longer. The strip has also been used in recording tapes to double the playing time without having to manually take out the tape and change the side playing. The universal recycling sign of three arrows all pointing round in a circle is a mobius strip.

I used a strip of colourful hand made wrapping paper to make my mobius strip, but try it yourself with a plain strip of paper.

Feeling better today but we had a frost last night so waiting for the temperature to rise a bit before venturing out into the sun. meantime I played nicely with this!
