"Happy Grandparents"

... is what the banner says.

Sometimes it pays to get up early. We were out and about while all the backpackers were still in their beds recovering from their Friday night social excesses and came across this procession getting into formation. There were marching girls, a marching band (and they did the same dance routine as the marching girls, while playing drums, xylophones...), "the most important man in Quito" - the mayor - and thousands of people wearing t-shirts saying "60 and a little bit - active and healthy forever". Some were in wheelchairs, some hobbled along with help and some danced. It's evidently a widespread and well supported campaign to encourage active lives and respect for the elderly. The elderly are certainly in favour of it. Not that 60 is elderly really...
We followed them for the mile or so to a huge park where there was a concert and a kind of rally (with thoughtfully provided chairs) in an enormous marquee.

I couldn't fit the whole crowd into one shot. This isn't even half of it.
