A Year in Phnom Penh

Political Art

Today we visited several art exhibitions as part of the Our City Festival, a festival aimed at raising awareness of issues of the urbanisation of Phnom Penh, either positive or negative.

This one highlighted the issue of land evictions, focusing on one location in Phnom Penh, where hundreds of families have been forcibly evicted and had their homes destroyed, in order to make way for future development they will never be a part of. Here two artists had collaborated, salvaging items from destroyed residences and using these as canvases for their work.

This photo shows a piece of wood from one of the buildings onto which the artist has transfered one of his photos taken during a protest against the evictions.

An ongoing issue for this country.
