Same Sex Marriage Result
In Australia we have recently had a ballot which was designed to make clear the feelings of the public regarding making same sex marriage legal.
The result was just announced, with the result being 62% yes, 38% no.
What is really interesting is that nearly 80% of eligible voters did just that.
So now it has to be made law.
The high voting rate may also have something to do with the fact that voting is compulsory in Australian, so we're used to considering issues and voting on them.
I think the ballot (which was non binding) was a waste of time and money, but let's hope that after all the kerfuffle about cake makers and photographers' rights, we might soon have an end to it, though many pollies have other ideas.
Now all we have to do is work out the dual citizenship problems and we can get on with other matters of national concern.
I was intrigued by the efforts of both sides to display their preferences in many ways, usually involving the decoration of their houses, and I photographed many of these.
It's rare for me to post a blip not taken on the day, but this was taken a month ago and is my favourite, decorating a very modest fibro house in Lewisham.
