The Old Tolbooth
The site of the Old Tolbooth on the Royal Mile is marked out by a set of brass plates embedded into the cobbles. They show significant dates in the tolbooth's history.
The tolbooth was an administrative centre of the town and a prison.
A charter of 1386 provided the land on which the tolbooth was built. The tolbooth was extended in 1610 and 1678. It remained on this site until the early 19th century.
