Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Budapest: Day 4

We have spent much of the day exploring the old Jewish quarter of Pest. Inevitably a sobering experience.
The photograph was taken the Kazinczy Street Orthodox Synagogue and shows a flaking section of the wall decoration.
The Synagogue is an Art Nouveau masterpiece built in 1912. Inevitably it suffered serious damage in the Second World War when it was used as a stable by the Arrow Cross (the Hungarian fascists) and the German Nazis. Now, beautifully restored it again looks resplendent.
