CBArchitecture - The Rows
Community Challenge: Your Local Architecture
This is a picture of the Chester Rows. The Rows, dating from the medieval era circa 1350, are found on the four roads radiating from The Cross in the center of the town.
At street level are modern shops (as you would find in most UK towns) but the first level consists of other shops and premises set back from the street, in front of which is a continuous walkway . The storey above this overlaps the walkway. This covered walkway is the "Row".
On the street side of the walkway are railings and an area which, in medieval times, was used as shelves or stalls for the display of goods.
