Betel Nut Sellers
We were up earlyish this morning to head back to Sanya. A quick brekky of beef noodles and we hopped on the bus for a two hour ride back. These ladies are selling betel nut. The fruit is sold with a betel leaf that has a pasting of lime (not the fruit) on it. After a while chewing, it all turns red and the excess is spat onto the ground. The locals live for the stuff. They ride up on their bikes and buy a few nuts and take off. A lot fo them have red teeth from constantly chewing it. The old ladies who sell it sit there and chew all day. It is supposed to give you a buzz. I tried it in Sanya a few days ago and Terri said my eyes were very blank when I was talking.
After we got back to Sanya, we headed out for a quick lunch of burgers and then headed to the beach. I took T in to about waste high and she stayed there while I went for a bit of body surfing. It's the first beach I have been at in China where that was possible.
After the 'swim' we went back and had a shower and went out for a nice fish dinner. We had been the that same restaurant a few times and the guy told us he would give us a free dish if we came back.. When we got there, he tried to sell us some dead fish and then one that was almost dead but when we would only take a fully live one I think he got a bit testy and forgot about the free dish. To kill the fish, he takes it out of the tank with a net on a long stick then bashes it on the floor a few times.
After dinner we took a bus to Sanya Bay and watched the activities of people dancing.. Chinese people love to dance. There were different groups. Some were doing ballroom dancing ands other were doing very exhausting looking aerobic type dancing. They were all having a good time.
