Footbridge nearing completion
The construction of a new footbridge with lifts at Westerton Station seems to be nearing an end. It started in June and the projected completion date was given as February. Tomorrow the bridge is scheduled to open. The old one is a complete eyesore - a rusting relic. The 200 tonne crane that moved the steel beams into position has gone and only the lifts themselves seem to be missing. Surely it does not take another 2 months to commission the lifts?!
The project is part of the Scottish Government’s Access for All scheme to upgrade the station for passengers with mobility issues, luggage, prams or cycles. Also, when ice and snow are around the steps can be treacherous despite the network's efforts to keep them clear - and the new bridge has lots more steps because it's higher! Including a canopy or enclosing the whole structure might have been a good idea and saved hours of snow-clearing and tons of salt! The sooner the lifts are working the better.
