Surf's up!
Just north of Duluth, Minnesota, a family enjoys the balmy 21 degree Fahrenheit temperatures by playing on top of frozen Lake Superior. They agreed to be in my picture to lend some proper scale to the ice drifts.
The lake crushes the ten inch thick sheet of ice against the shore and with a low groan and occasional, deafening clap, grinds and stacks it into great drifts of chunks, some the size of cars. These drifts follow the shoreline for miles and miles, all the way to Canada...I only drove for twenty minutes before the main highway became a little too snow-logged.
It was time to turn around anyway to pick my husband up from his meeting in town (the reason for the day trip)
Glad I went along..some good chatting, some laughs and this picture!
