The centre of the Universe.
Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was an Italian polymath and dangerous heretic.
Galileo championed the absurd notion that the earth was in orbit around the Sun (heliocentrism) whilst his betters subscribed to the idea that everything rotated around the Earth. The matter was investigated by the Roman Inquisition in 1615, which concluded that heliocentrism was "foolish and absurd in philosophy, and formally heretical since it explicitly contradicted the sense of Holy Scripture.
It being a wet day I have spent the morning revisiting Galilieo's ideas and checking his calculations with my old BBC microcomputer. The graphic output of the calculations shows quite clearly that the Divines were quite correct; the Universe is clearly spinning around the Earth, or to be precise, around London.
