Welp... A strange thing happened this afternoon. A nurse at work asked me about getting music from her iPad back to her macbook, after the latter got its music library caned by something she installed. I went to message her a link, started to enter her mobile phone number, and the messaging window crashed. That happened repeatedly.

Through the afternoon I tried many different combinations of things to see what was going on. Turned out that if I start a new message (not an existing message conversation) and begin to type in a mobile phone number, rather than a name (whether or not that number is in my contacts, or associated with an iMessage ID), Messages crashes.

Weirder yet: if I begin to type in a NZ mobile number it's fine. Aussie numbers, it's not.

Well... I'm the first/only person to report this.

So. Apple support product specialist dude wants me to backup, then restore (set up) as a new phone once I get home.

Yay.
