Danger in grass.. Is Ravenna grass too happy
Ravenna grass (Sachrum ravenna) often called Pampas grass here in Colorado is a stunning addition to landscapes too cold to grow Pampas grass (Cortadeira selloana) well. It has been popular for at least 20+ years here in Colorado. I am starting to see a few seedlings here and there in local drainage areas. Whether they are just a few strays or the beginning of a new invasion time will tell.
Here is what the Morton arboretum in Chicago says
"Ravenna grass is a very large, non-native grass that is often used as a substitute for Pampas grass in northern climates. It is sometimes called hardy pampas grass. This grass should be used with caution as it has shown invasive tendencies in southern states."
