The horse in the car park
I've banked with Lloyds since I was a teenager, following family tradition. Fishguard's small branch was a friendly place whose staff knew their customers by name and welcomed their dogs to come inside out of the rain. But it closed earlier this year as did another of the town's three banks. Instead, this van parks here two afternoons a week for anyone who wants or needs to interact with a person rather than an app or a computer screen.
Meanwhile the premises of the two closed banks remain empty, like abandoned mausoleums, on the town's main street, It's hard to imagine any alternative use for such large buildings.
The horse, photographed on a Welsh beach (Rhossili) is an English-born Trakenher named Holme Grove Prokoviev. The breed, originally from East Prussia, was almost wiped out during WW2 when the Russian army advanced from the east. "The main stud and local residents were given permission to evacuate on 17 October 1944. Their journey West, known as Der Treck ("The Flight"), sent the horses on a dangerous journey in frigid conditions across the frozen Vistula without proper rations or shelter. It is considered one of the toughest tests to which an entire breed of horses has been submitted."
Tough luck if you want to visit your nearest bank branch. It's either this van mobile branch or travel 15 miles to the nearest actual bank.
