Purple sandpiper

We didn’t see any seals, porpoises or dolphins but it was good to take part in the sea watch at the Rossall Point Observation Tower in Fleetwood. The sea was too rough to spot mammals, but we did see a few sea birds. The watch, organised by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust, started at the top of the tower, but we soon retreated to the enclosed glassed area lower down. Much warmer in there. The weather cleared a bit during the afternoon and it wasn’t long before we could see across the bay, and over the waves, to Barrow.

On the way back to the car park, I saw five purple sandpipers amongst the sanderlings and turnstones. I hadn’t seen purple sandpipers before, so I was pleased with the sighting today. The photo isn’t great, but I think it's a reasonable record shot. In case you are wondering, purple sandpipers aren’t purple.
