Halifax Coat of Arms

This detail is from the gates of Halifax Piece Hall.
The head is that of John the Baptist who was the patron saint of wool traders - quite fitting for the Piece Hall.
Legend says his head is buried closeby - but I think that is pure legend.
The sheep/lamb and the flag of St. George are self explanatory.  The latin text translates as "Except the Lord keep the City".
