Whitby Abbey as seen from the Whalebone Arch.
This is Whitby Abbey as Bram Stoker first saw it, from the opposite side of the harbour, stood between the Whalebone Gate.
As most of you know, Bram Stoker is known for his novel Dracula. It actually started out as a play.
The little beach you can see just below the Abbey was once the landing place of a disastrous ship-wreck. Stoker read about this in the library of a Gentleman's Club (not that sort!) & this is where he came up with the famous ship that carried Dracula over to England, lying in his coffin lined with the dirt of his homeland...The Dementer.
The Abbey is where Dracula bit Lucy upon the bench in the grounds of the graveyard that is pictured in front of the Abbey...I'll leave you with that little insight, otherwise I'll go on all night! :D
