The holly grew in the churchyard. In the graveyard. And the scratches that it inflicted seemed fair payment for the promise of Christmas that it gave. On the way back home, she would sometimes hold the branches tightly enough that they hurt. So that, in return, Christmas would be obliged to be especially good.
