Jack Frost

Stories about him changed and contradicted each other. It wasn't clear whether he was a victim of the cold or whether he visited the cold upon others. Whatever his nature, Mothers used his name to scare their children into obedience and, for the rest of us, thoughts of him made us poke the fire and check that the doors were locked.
