Don't Worry, Mary
Round trip up through Spain today (territory disputed with Portugal, actually), and back through Portugal. Decided to climb the hill to visit a spectacular castle perched on a knoll at Alcochel. To our utter bemusement, when we got up there, a full scale fair was going on, with loads of folk in Bible times costume, including this little family in a stable, guarded incongruously by two Roman soldiers (seeing as the main activity of Roman soldiers in the Bible story was killing all the baby boys). Love the look on Joseph's face.
Anyway, we paid 2 euros each, for which we got a commemorative mug, and then wandered about, wondering how to buy the food. Got some roast chestnuts thrust upon us, and eventually realized the barbecued meat and bread, and wine for our mugs, and hot doughnuts and who knows what else were all free. Everyone was very friendly, think we were the only foreigners there.
Just wish I still had extras for the cute lambs, and the arches in Olivença, and the mirror-still water at the Ajuda bridge, and Juromenha castle after sunset...
PS. Have added here.
