Three Wise Men, Magi or KIngs and an Archangel
11. And when they were come into the house, they saw the yong child with Mary his mother, and fell downe, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented vnto him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrhe.
12. And being warned of God in a dreame, that they should not returne to Herode, they departed into their owne countrey another way.
From the 1611 King James Bible
This is a modern reproduction of a carving on a capital in Autun Cathedral, in the centre of France. It was carved by a man named Gislebertus, the greatest sculptor of his period. We know his name because on one of his carvings he put the words 'Gislebertus hoc fecit' – 'Gislebertus made this'. He carried out the work in Autun between 1125 and 1135.
The carving shows the three Magi asleep in bed, rather incongruously still wearing their crowns, dreaming of the holy archangel who is warning them not to return to Herod but to flee home by a different route.
