One of Australia’s Big Things

The Big Merino, opened in 1995, is a 15.2 metres tall concrete merino ram, located in Goulburn. It contains a gift shop on the ground floor and a wool display on the second floor. Visitors can climb to the top and look out through the Merino's eyes to view the local area.

We had a 6 hour drive to Cooma this morning and made a stop along the way so I could snap this for my Silly Saturday entry.

‘Big Things’ in Australia are large novelty structures and sculptures. There are about 150 of them around the country and most began as tourist traps.  The silly thing is that these big things have become something of a cult phenomenon.  Some are now heritage listed.

I have seen these ‘bigs’ - banana, guitar, gold panner, prawn, lobster, pineapple, rocking horse, Murray cod. Thankfully I’ve managed to avoid the big poo! (I kid you not. Apparently it was erected in protest at the construction of a sewage recycling plant.)

Thanks to Admirer for hosting the challenge.
