'No my deer, you can NOT eat my shrubs!'
This is taken in the middle of the day smack in the middle of my backyard. A family of white tail deer came to visit. Actually there were two more but they fled before I grabbed my camera. This is getting to be a regular occurrance and after doing some investigating I have discovered that I pretty much have the perfect enviromment for them in my yard. I have all their favorite shrubs and plants, my yard is quiet and provide the desired type of space to be able to pop in and out of the wooded area.
Reports have estimated that there are nearly 200,000 whitetail deer in New Jersey, compared to one-hundred years ago when there was practically no deer at all. It's really becoming a concern for a lot of reasons. Aside from the ecological imbalance, they can cause automobile accidents and damage to landscaping.
Some interesting facts:
White Tail Deer
-a deer's nose is about 100x more sensitive than ours
-a deer can jump a 9 foot fence
-deer are the largest wild herbivore in NJ
-a deer's stomach is able to digest different foods at specific times of the year. This helps it survive the changing availability of food, and why only certain plants and shrubs are eaten at particular times of the year.
I like them to look at and watch from my saftey of my home but that's as far as I'll go. I do say they make for some fun photography!
