Angel in Cookham Churchyard
Quite hard to make the connection with Past Empires, but I could not resist the picture.
This was the view immortalised by Cookham's most famous son, Sir Stanley Spencer.
If I do try to stretch the point, there was an Anglo-Saxon Abbey at Cookham with King Offa of Mercia's widow Cynethyth as Abbess. Cookham Abbey was the centre of a power struggle between Mercia and Wessex.
The current church built in the 12th Century is probably on the foundations of a church from 750.
