Snowy Wilderness

High pressure, a sunny day and snow on the hills. Irresistible!

This is the view from near the summit of Whiteside in the NW fells, looking down across the valley of Gasgale Gill, up and over Coledale Hause and beyond to the snowy Helvellyn ridge on the horizon. The heavy clouds hanging just above the summits lowered shortly after I took this photo, and my walk along the ridge to Hopegill Head was very cold (well below zero) and featureless. In fact, the whiteout conditions made me turn and retrace my steps back down Whiteside to the car at Lanthwaite Gate.

As can happen, the clouds cleared away to reveal a tantalisingly beautiful ridge as I walked down to the valley. But I couldn't complain.... it was a super outing in its own right.
