Sunset over Wicken Fen

A trip out to Wicken Fen looked like it had been a bad idea as it poured with rain as soon as we arrived- so we camped out in a bird hide hoping it would pass. Eventually it did, and we were rewarded with a beautiful sunset. We'd gone there with the hope of seeing short-eared owls as they come in to their roost on Adventurers Fen, but didn't see any. These birds come to the UK from the continent and numbers very hugely year-on-year, however we saw 4 or 5 barn owls in their place, kestrels, a few marsh harriers and one hen harrier. Our new years' day bird count stood at 36 species by the time we went home! A lovely day that I won't forget.
