Pancake Rocks

I’m spoiled for great images today, traveling up the west coast of South Island. This is taken at a place called the Pancake Rocks in the Paparoa National Park. As a geologist, I thought that I had seen most geological features, or could at least explain them, but this site is intriguing. Layers of calcareous sea fossils, but separated by very thin layers of mud. I think I have an explanation, but it is unusual all the same.
