Evening sun
Ooh, overload. Another day, another city. Back to Bangkok, where the SE Asia odyssey started but this time we did leave the airport. Our flight was remarkably close to being on time - i.e. within 30 minutes. That's practically a record for this trip. Immigration was a bit of a bore, and we had to queue for a while for a taxi, but at least there is a system, and it basically works. And contrary to expectations, the traffic getting into the city was not too bad (perhaps because it was Sunday afternoon).
After checking in, we wandered out a bit. We are in the Sathorn/Bang Rak area, and we found our way to the river and had a beer, followed by a quick meal in a somewhat touristy but perfectly adequate restaurant. An early night beckons after all the rushing around in the last few days!
My first impressions of Bangkok are good. Epically busy, of course, but it looks as if it's an interesting city and I read an article in the inflight magazine (we were on a proper airline for once...) about the Bangkok Art Biennale which sounds very interesting and quite challenging for a place like this. L has some friends who have lived in Bangkok for several years and they've previously supplied us with long lists of suggestions for activities and sights beyond the normal tourist track which we could - if we had time - pursue. This visit is far too short, but I definitely hope we can come back.
