A Car is Coming! A Car is Coming!

Merrick's first Pinewood Derby is coming up. It is an event sponsored by the Boy Scouts (Merrick is a cub scout), and involves each boy being given a small block of wood, along with wheels and axles...and having to fashion it into a car that will glide down a ramp. Hopefully...glide down a ramp.

Grandpa cut out the shape, and daddy Doug is watching Merrick apply the paint. Tomorrow night, we apply graphite to the wheels and axles, and attach them. Finally, you get it weighed (it can be up to 5 ounces), perhaps apply some weights, and get ready to race.

It brings back memories of the first derby that my son Jeff and I were in. Our first car never made it to the bottom of the ramp. It was kind of embarrassing, but he did win an award for design. (It was shaped like a shark.)

The second year...we actually won a couple of races.
