Royal York Terrace
is nearly 1/4 mile long and reputedly the longest in Europe - eat your heart out Bath! I took this several houses along, standing on the raised pavement over vaults that form the entrances to the basement and sub basement of each of the 46 Grade 11 listed houses.
As you can see, the postman has to use a cart for he cannot bring his van up here.
Building began in 1791 over gardens and orchards belonging to a mansion built by a 17th century landowner. After a few years the builders went bankrupt and work stopped. Later the War Department bought the site with its unfinished houses and considered building barracks there. Persuaded by public opinion against this scheme, they sold it to a developer who finished the work in 1820. It is now probably the most expensive street in Bristol with magnificent views over the Docks, Bristol and surrounding countryside.
