St Albans Row

A damp, misty day in Carlisle. I took this photo as I walked through to get to the entrance of Waterstones, which is not here as it seems, but through the archway on the main street. This is actually the back of the Old Town Hall, the clock being the town hall clock.

In the picture, the back of the Old Town Hall is on the right; on the left is St Albans Row. Throughout much of the Middle Ages, there was a chapel here, dedicated to St Alban. Apparently there is a plaque commemorating this, but I have never seen it. It was a Free Chapel, only 'tolerated' by the Bishop and was probably closed down in the 16th Century. Later, a row of four terraced houses was built on the site, houses which were later turned into shops, at least on the ground floor.

In Extras, I have put a copy of a photo from 1900. It's interesting to see what has been changed and what hasn't.
