Leaf Dumping

There they were glowing on the corner of my street
neatly arranged on the silver maple tree,
gold in the autumn light,
amazing all who passed by.
Then last night rain
and rain and rain, all night long.
Unrelenting drops pulled their stems loose.
Now, the sun's out for a while and the
still gold leaves lay dumped under their naked tree.
It's over for another year.
