Traditional Onion Festival?

We happened upon the annual September 'Zwiebeln Fest' by chance this evening.. The town centre is crammed with stalls, rides, and all manner of extravaganza.. Apparently it has been occurring for hundreds of years, unfortunately all traces of tradition seem to have vanished and I didn't see a single onion anywhere.
