Battleground

I’ve been visited by lots of goldfinches since I started to fill a couple of feeders with sunflower hearts.

Most of the shops charge huge prices for these so I shop online in industrial quantities. Before I put sunflower hearts out, I had never had any success but the day I started, they began to arrive and sometimes there can be as many as 25 battling on the feeders or feeding on the hearts that have dropped. I even have a robin who’s learned to take them from the feeders !

Today’s blip is, of course, of the old niger seed feeder. I’d put niger seeds out for years, to no effect. I have two large feeders with sunflower hearts and that’s never enough when the goldfinches are out in force.

Occasionally, there will be a crafty one who has an uninterrupted feed of niger seed. Occasionally there may be others who try it out.

Today it was so frantic that there were battles around the niger feeder as well.

It’s hard to get a clear shot (in this lack of light particularly) but I wanted to give a flavour of the action.
