The female of the species......

These little Sea anemone like structures are the female flowers of the Hazel tree. 
The long showy yellow catkins (or lambs tails) are the male flowers which release the pollen, which gets caught on the sticky red tentacles of these female flowers and subsequently develops into the well known hazel nut.
I love the yellow catkins, but I must say I really love  these tiny female flowers.
