It was surprising to see a large hairy caterpillar crossing the path before disappearing into the long grass during a break in its hibernation.   The caterpillar which was about 6 cms with long brown hairs on the sides of the body and shorter dark orange hairs on the upper surface was probably having a walk during a break in its hibernation.  In April it should pupate before emerging later as a Fox Moth
