Opened Stone

Opened Stone is the name of this sculpture by Japanese artist Hiroaki Ueda. It is the only work of his that is on display outside of Japan. It was placed here above the Manukau harbour about 18 months ago after spending eight years in storage. Previously it was in the forecourt of the Auckland Art Gallery. It is carved from a single block of red African granite and is reminiscent of a Shinto prayer gate. We discovered this in its new home while scouting around for possible sunset locations.
