yellow stars
In two weeks' time , on Saturday 27th January, it will be Holocaust Memorial Day. At Dunscore Church, this day will also see the official opening of the Heritage Centre, which celebrates local history including the life of Jane Haining, who was born in Dunscore and died in Auschwitz.
There will be a short service at noon, before the official opening, and everyone who comes along will be invited to take a felt cross, dove or star to symbolise love, peace and justice, which are the themes of the day. I have spent some of this afternoon cutting them out. The doves are the trickiest. When I was cutting out the yellow stars, I was reminded of Mrs Lazslo's yellow star, which is on display in the heritage centre. You can read the very moving account of how her mother cut up a yellow bedspread to make it, and HERE you can hear Karine Polwart singing about Jane.
