Falkirk Canal Tunnel

The Falkirk Tunnel is a 650m long tunnel which cuts under the rock of Prospect Hill in Falkirk.

Built from 1818 to 1820 as part of the Union Canal, this is the longest canal tunnel in Scotland. It was so long to ensure that the Forbes family of the Callander Estates in Falkirk would not see the canal from their house - perhaps NIMBY is not a new phenomenon!

The lighting was added as part of the Union Canal millennium project, and makes the tunnel walkable without a torch.

This picture was a 5s exposure without a tripod, so please forgive any camera shake you can see!
