Luther

Back Blip

Day four of our Rhine Cruise and we docked early in Mannheim. This was our stopping-off point for a day-trip to Heidelberg, noted for its beautiful streets and squares, but mostly for its world-renowned University.

The most famous church in Heidelberg is the Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche) and it is a pretty impressive building, but what caught my attention was this large Playmobil figure of Martin Luther near the exit door of the church. Plamobil produced this to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, in which Luther played a leading part. It was reported that this Martin Luther figure became Playmobil's fastest-selling toy! Don't know what the old Reformer would have thought of that!

Another figure in another church, the Jesuit Church (Jesuitenkirche), is a striking representation of the Holy Spirit (see extra photo). I was struck by the imagery of this model and, if it hadn't been for Rev Luther, would have been my Blip for the day.
