Nick's search for thermals was getting too risky.

Paragliders ( and ordinary glider pilots [ and birds ! ] ) use columns of hot air called "thermals" to help them gain lift. 

At this scale, the heat provided by a candle should give Nick more lift than he could ever need, although he does seem to be cutting it quite fine !*
