Showing off - one legged landing
The juvenile white fronted tern watching with interest as the adult comes in for a one legged landing (although it did produce the other leg once on the ground!).
Scientific name: Sterna striata
Maori name: Tara
Wonderfully acrobatic flyers, they seem to enjoy spending time on the wing, occasionally diving for small fish. They do bathe, but rarely swim on the water, although they have webbed feet. They are very vocal birds and have a variety of calls. They sit facing the wind when in groups, and will call loudly at any intrusion - either from other birds, or even other terns, as well as people and animals.
