La guerre

I was transfixed by this picture, painted in 1925 by a young French artist, Marcel Gromaire . Having seen War first hand in the trenches he depicts 5 young French soldiers waiting. They are hued in such a way as to show they are petrified, as in preserved wood, but this is word play on the felt emotions. Fear. They are expressionless, agents in a huge game, where no one knew the rules. Such is war. La guerre. As ugly now as then.. may we be peace builders.
