Wicked Generation
In July 1845, 18 families (some 90 people) in Glencalvie were evicted from their crofts to make way for sheep. Sheltering in the churchyard they scratched names, dates and messages on the diamond-pane windows of the church at Croik. The "wicked generation" refers to an understanding that their parlous state must have been their fault, that they were being punished for their sins. It's the title of a novel on the Clearances by Alison Johnson.
