Day 027/18. A city of vaults.

A wet day today but we decided to do a guided tour of old Southampton. As it was wet and miserable it turned out we were the only 2 on it, which meant we had a personal tour guide. Perfect.
In the middle ages Southampton exported wool and imported wine. Once unloaded from the ships from France the barrels of wine were stored in large underground vaults in the city for onward trade. Importantly there was a need to store wine for the royal household as each merchant had to pay the monarch tax in the form of wine.
During WWII many of these were turned into Air Raid shelters to protect the population from the air raids that destroyed a huge part of the town. Today we saw 4 of those vaults, my pictures today are of a couple of them. Very interesting despite the rain.....
