As the ornithologist (who volunteered us to take part in the RSPB survey) was away for the weekend, it fell to me to settle down at the window this morning for an hour with a cup of tea.

If the bloody siskins, chaffinches, goldfinches and blue tits had stopped fighting for just one minute perhaps my count might have been more accurate.
