Matai Falls
Departed Curio Bay after a great night, what an awesome place and a very quirky campground.
As it was mother-in-laws birthday, we headed out for brunch, conveniently to the Niagara Falls Café which was enroute. Absolutely fabulous setting and a must visit.
Then off to do some sightseeing, waterfalls the initial targets. First one was closed, due to skips. Cathedral Caves closed due to slips (there has been a lot of rain), Matai Falls open with only a relatively short walk to the small but spectacular falls. Purakaunui Falls were next and these were also very impressive, especially in flood. And finally out to Purakaunui which is where we thought we'd spend the night.
Certainly, a very impressive beach, but very open and exposed, a very average camping area, and not perfect weather meant this wasn't the place for us. We headed to Pounamea Bay Motor Camp, via Owaka and the very funny Teapotland and Dollyworld. World famous in Okawa!
I admit, I was less than enthusiastic about camping on an estuary, so we headed off to Kawa Point to look at the campground there. Yuck, back to Pounamea we went, and had an awesome night. A great communal kitchen with a fire and everything, and we met some a great Aussie couple.
Very good night.
