Urban....

.....the old, the new and the inbetween......

Kaiapoi railway station was built in 1904. It ceased to be used for railway purposes in 1986 and survived three fires, one of which was a lightning strike, and was twice saved from demolition by the actions of residents and the Historic Places Trust. The restored building reopened in 2003 as the visitor i-Site, and after it survived the earthquake it was relocated again before being abandoned in 2015. Currently it's a cafe called 'Paris for the Weekend', certainly suits the building with it's ornate style, Marseilles tiled roof and little turret, the food is pretty good to.

Across the road is the new Kaiapoi New World Supermarket opening December 15, 2011 after being severely damaged by the earthquakes, the old building was demolished.

And the inbetween.........are the Kaiapoi public loo's with their brightly painted mural of small houses as it sits alongside the Kaiapoi river. 

A bit of an urban sprawl adding character and uniqueness to this small river town.

Thanks to steveng for hosting this month's Wide Angle Wednesday with today's theme being 'urban'. I did look at shots on google and a lot of them were stunning, beautifully lit architecture reflected in water, architecture against blue, blue sky.......and well......then we have Kaiapoi on a rather quiet day probably because it's been 30C, no blue sky to be seen, far too hot to be out and about for too long, however, the groceries needed to be done.
