Look who we found in the cemetery!

The last time I saw a red squirrel in the Uk was in about 1970, and that was in a nature reserve. As we were walking across Assistens Cemetery in Copenhagen, a little group of them appeared, heading for a sweet chestnut tree. Then a passing dog spoiled the party, but before long one bold fellow reappeared on the ground.

The cemetery was one of those serendipitous discoveries that you make when you walk in a city (or indeed any place) that you don't know. There are lots of trees and the graves are hidden behind neat hedges. It's not at all a morbid place. By chance too we came upon a sign pointing to the grave of Hans Christian Andersen (which we found) and another to that of Soren Kierkegaard (which we didn't).

Later, in the wonderful Laundromat Café we found a copy of next week's Time Magazine (I do mean next week's) which had an article about what to do in Copenhagen at Halloween, including a recommended visit to Assistens Cemetery!!! As well as Tivoli, of course, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, which at this season is full of pumpkins and the scent of candyfloss, and which you can see here.
